AWAKENING: A Sunset to Sunrise Peace Vigil
In solidarity with Terry Riley's peace vigil in Nevada City, California:

Members of the UCSD music community will convene at the Ché Café from 7pm on Wednesday, October 2 until 7am on Thursday, October 3, for a twelve-hour performance of La Monte Young's "Composition 1960 #7", the perfect fifth B and F-sharp, "to be held for a long time".

Terry Riley's concept of staying awake is a metaphor for staying vigilant and putting activism before personal comfort (read below).

All are welcome to come for all or part of the night, either to listen and stay awake or to help keep the fifth continuous through the night.

La Monte Young's "Composition 1960 #7" is a statement of continuity and unity. The perfect fifth symbolizes the profound source of all sound, universal energy, eternity. As such it is an expression of peace.

He has performed solo concerts world-wide, played with most of the musicains associated with free improvisation, and recorded over 100 albums. He will be joined by the phenomenal George Lewis, improvisor-trombonist, composer, and computer/installation artist who first played with Bailey in Company, an international emsemble of improvisationalists formed by Bailey in 1976. Lewis has been a member of the AACM since 1971. He has received Fellowships from the NEA, and is the 1999 recipient of the CalArts/Alpert Award in the Arts and a 2002 recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship.

Rubble on Spruce
Trummerflora member and native San Diegan Nathan Hubbard celebrates the release of his new album. "Born on Tuesday" finds percussionist Hubbard stepping out of his usual group projects for his first solo recording. After a year of his 12 steps program (one solo concert a month), Hubbard presents a wide range of his solo work, using free improvisation, junk percussion, homemade electronics, drum set, and extreme processing to create a wide ranging landscape of sound. www.returntoone.com

Las Cajas Del Ritmo - Ramon Amescua, Pepe Mogt, Jorge Ruiz - drum machines, electronics Las Cajas Del Ritmo utilizes about 30 vintage and custom built drum machines to traverse a wide range of improvised and composed sonic territories. Ramon (aka Bostich), Pepe and Jorge (aka Fussible) are key members of the Tijuana-based Nortec Collective. First envisioned by Pepe in 1999, the word "Nortec" represents a combination of "norteño" (a traditional music of northwest Mexico) and techno. Since then, Nortec's infectious combination of traditional and modern dance music has garnered much international attention. www.milrecords.com
