Other Ideas at The Space
The SPECTRUM Saxophone Quartet is a pioneering ensemble dedicated to
exploring the entire array of musical colors available to the saxophone.
This unique and fascinating group is the only quartet in the world to
regularly perform on the entire saxophone family from the tiny sopranino to
the majestic seven-foot tall contrabass. This expanded instrumentation
gives them an astonishing seven-octave range, and an unforgettable visual
impact. Spectrum will be playing a new quartet written for them by Rick Helzer and
several other pieces. www.spectrumquartet.com
The Rubber Band is an ad hoc meeting of some of San Diego's finest string
players. Nathan Hubbard, who curates this concert, liked the idea so much
he named it. Featuring- Scott Walton, bass, Joscha Oetz, bass, Justin
Grinnell, bass, Alex Khalil, cello, Al Scholl, guitar and Gascia Ouzounian,
violin.

RAZAFEST presents FRONTIER LIFE Screening and Discussion
Join filmmakers Hans Fjellestad and Ivan Diaz Robledo for a screening and discussion of their compelling documentary "Frontier Life." This independently-produced documentary by a founding member of San Diego's Trummerflora Collective documents the vibrant, fascinasting, funny and often surreal experience of life in 21st Century Tijuana. Featuring interviews with members of Tijuana's Nortec Collective, architectcs, street racers, water treatment officials and others, "Frontier Life" demonstrates how Tijuana's independent spirit and the flow of its creative energy provide a model for the city of the future. If necessity is the mother of invention, then Tijuana is where she gave birth and raised her kid. The stunning documentary features artwork by Gerardo Yepiz and music from Bostich, Titicacaman, Clorofila, Marcos Fernandes and others.

NOISE at the Library
NOISE ensemble and special guests. NOISE-makers Lisa Cella, flute; Morris Palter, percussion; Colin McAllister, guitar; and Felix Fan, cello will perform works that span the many styles of modern music, from "old school" New York to spectral experimentations. As always, the emphasis is on the diversity in the current music world, and a commitment to the works of young composers, especially composers from Southern California. A high point of the concert will be the premiere of a composition by David Lipten - the first piece commissioned by San Diego New Music this season. Other composers on the program include William Sydeman, Tristan Murail, and Kaija Saariaho. NOISE will also be joined by two distinguished guests: conductor and UCSD professor Harvey Sollberger, and violinist Päivikki Nykter.
Pre-concert lecture at 7:00pm.
